Event Overview

By Scott Long

The Ante Up Poker Tour will make its first stop in Reno with a series that features something for everyone in a venue with a magnificent view at Atlantis Casino Resort Spa Aug. 16-26.

“Our tournament area has floor-to-ceiling windows that look out at the surrounding Sierra Nevada Mountains. I call it, #PokerWithAView,” said Keith Dames, poker room manager for Atlantis Casino Resort Spa. “It is located above the poker room and race and sports book on the second floor. Many of our returning tournament players would also have me mention that it is a short walk from the Bistro Napa, one of our award-winning restaurants. Many of our events have dinner breaks that just so happen to coincide with Social Hour, where amazing food, wine and cocktails are half price!”

The series feature 18 events, a dozen satellites and more than $350,000 in guaranteed prize money. Dames and tournament director Andy Patton use player feedback to hone each series the resort runs to be better than the previous one.

“Every time we run a series, we try to learn a little more about our players and tweak our next series,” Dames said. “Our players know that we listen and that we value their input. We try to design a schedule that offers fun, value at different price points, and of course big prize pools!
We always like to try new and interesting formats. This series will see us test out the big blind ante format for the first time on a few events.”

The highlight of the series is the $1,100 buy-in Main Event, which will feature two starting flights. The winner also will appear on the cover of the October issue of Ante Up Magazine and get a seat in the 2019 Ante Up World Championship Main Event at Thunder Valley Casino Resort, less than a couple of hours away near Sacramento, Calif.

“Our $1,100 Main Event has two Day 1s, a great structure and a $200,000 guarantee,” Dames said. “We won’t be surprised if the prize pool gets closer to $350,000.”

The rest of the schedule features a number of interesting events, including a $50,000 guaranteed multi-flight event opening weekend, a “black chip bounty” event where almost the entire prize pool is bounties and an 8-Game Mix event that draws from the room’s passion for games other than hold’em.

“Very early in my poker career, I got interested in mixed games. I brought that interest with me to the Atlantis 10 years ago, starting a weekly HORSE game right after I started dealing here,” Dames said. “Over the past few years, we have developed some weekly non-hold’em games, such as a pot-limit Dealer’s Choice game, a $6/12 Drawmaha and a PLO/PLO-8 game. Our Special Games Coordinator, Jaime Navarro, schedules and hosts these games and helps train the dealers on them. The 8-Game tournament allows us to expose new players to some of the games that we spread regularly in our poker room. It also gives the regulars from those games a chance to compete for bragging rights!”

The Western Senior Poker Series (WSPS) brand will be used for the series’ seniors event.

“Our seniors event is always well attended and usually crushes whatever guarantee we put up. This partnership gives our seniors points towards the WSPS season championship so they have a shot at winning a poker cruise,” Dames said. “Most of the WSPS events this year are being held right over the hill at Stones Gambling Hall, which is just a short drive from Reno. Players who earn points at the Atlantis have an excuse to go visit Stones, and players who have points from previous events at Stone’s will have an excuse to come up to Reno for a couple days.”

Also, the series will end with a $160 Casino Employee event.

“Casino employees from all over come to compete for the trophy and to talk trash!,” Dames said. “Our last Casino Employee event spawned a nickname for one of our dealers - “No Chop” Chad. Our team works hard for more than 10 days to put on the series and this event at the end lets them wind down with some friendly competition.”

Players have several satellite opportunities during the series, and cash game and daily tournament players will have chances to earn Main Event seats

“That is on top of our unprecedented $4 an hour comp rate and all the other bonuses and promotions we run on a daily basis. If you like money, you shouldn’t play poker anywhere else in Reno!,” said Dames, adding that regular cash games include $3/6 limit, $1/2 and $⅗ no limit and the mixed games that Navarro arranges. During the series, lists will be taken for bigger games, including pot-limit Omaha.

Atlantis Casino Resort Spa is a AAA Four Diamond resort, with a luxuriously appointed Concierge Tower. All rooms in that tower and the Luxury Tower feature custom desks with a multimedia launch pad where guests can connect their laptop to the 42-inch flatscreen HDTV. Guests can choose from eight award-winning restaurants, including Bistro Napa, a winner of the Wine Spectator's Award of Excellence, and Toucan Charlie’s Buffet & Grille, which has been voted Best Buffet by locals. Atlantis has a 30,000-square-foot spa, 50,000 square feet of convention space and a casino that offers 1,400 slot machines, table games, race and sports book, keno lounge and a comfortable, non-smoking poker room.

“If you have never been to the Atlantis, you should plan your trip immediately! Our Poker Room has the best staff I’ve ever worked with as well as the best comps and promotions of any place you’ll ever play,” Dames said. “We have the best restaurants in Northern Nevada. Don’t believe me? Check TripAdvisor! Our Steakhouse and Bistro Napa are constantly ranked #1 and #2 in the Reno/Sparks area, while three of our other outlets are in the top 15. We have the only Forbes four-star spa in the region. A special room rate is available for poker tournament players during the AUPT. Call the Poker Room for more info!”
